Mr Sam Evans has been a Consultant Ophthalmologist in West Wales since 2017. During that time he has earned a reputation as an expert in Cataract, refractive lens exchange, oculoplastics, glaucoma and general ophthalmology..
Mr Sam Evans is a consultant ophthalmologist who has been building his practice across west Wales since 2017, based at Werndale Hospital, Carmarthen. During that time he has developed long-standing relationships with community optometrists across the region, from Llanelli to Aberaeron, founded on trust, clear communication and excellent clinical outcomes.
He trained in ophthalmology in south Wales and holds formal fellowship training in oculoplastics and orbit. He has been managing complex glaucoma in west Wales since 2017. He is a pioneer of see-and-treat surgery for both cataract and oculoplastic procedures and is the only surgeon in Wales offering see-and-treat across both disciplines.
Mr Evans is also a co-founder of the Lutra Health platform, connecting community optometry directly with hospital ophthalmology through a seamless digital referral pathway.
Clir is the Welsh word for clear. It is pronounced the same way in Welsh and English, reads naturally to both communities, and captures in a single word what every patient hopes to gain from eye surgery.
It is a deliberate nod to west Wales, where Mr Evans has worked since 2017 and where the majority of his patients live. The Welsh language is woven into the fabric of this part of the world, and the name reflects that rootedness without requiring anyone to speak Welsh to understand it.
It also works on a clinical level. Clarity is what we aim to restore. It is what good communication between clinician and patient looks like. And it is what we try to bring to every aspect of this practice, from transparent pricing to honest conversations about outcomes.
Mr Evans has practised in west Wales since 2017, building longstanding relationships with community optometrists and caring for thousands of patients across the region. Clir Eye is not a new practice — it is a name and identity built around that existing work.
Creating a brand makes it easier for optometrists to refer directly, for patients to find information, and for Mr Evans to offer services like Advice and Guidance and the see-and-treat pathway in a way that is clearly structured and easy to access. Clir Eye offers four specialist disciplines, each delivered to the highest clinical standards at Werndale Hospital in Carmarthen. All services are available privately, with prompt appointments and rapid access to surgery.
Mr Evans introduced see-and-treat cataract surgery in Wales in 2020, and has since performed over 1,500 cases using this model — making him the most experienced see-and-treat cataract surgeon in the country. Rather than multiple clinic visits, patients discuss their options in a relaxed telephone consultation at a time that suits them, from home, with no waiting rooms and no repeat journeys.
Surgery takes place at the same appointment as assessment, using the full range of premium and toric lenses, with transparent all-inclusive pricing. A face-to-face consultation is always available for patients who prefer it — but most, once they understand the pathway, choose the simplicity of see-and-treat.
The most efficient option of all is bilateral see-and-treat: both eyes assessed and treated in a single visit. Around 60 to 70% of eligible patients choose this option. One appointment, both eyes done, recovery underway the same day.
At Clir Eye, the lens we recommend is always the one that is right for you — not the one that generates the highest fee. Our surgical fee is fixed regardless of which lens you choose, so our only consideration when advising you is your vision, your lifestyle, and your clinical needs.
We welcome referrals from community optometrists across west Wales. All referrals are acknowledged within 24 hours, and surgery is usually completed within three to four weeks of that call.
